Yoga for Beginners

“I’ve always wanted to try yoga, but I have no idea what I’m doing and don’t know where to begin.” If these words have crossed your lips, then you’ve come to the right place!

Join Mark for this accessible, slow-paced, weekly yoga class to help you learn, understand, break down, build up, enjoy and embody the basics of yoga. No yoga experience or fancy yoga pants are necessary – you don’t even have to be “flexible” … this is an accessible class for anyone, any age, any fitness level, any BODY. Yes, even you!

Whether you’re curious, wanting to learn the basics before sampling our other classes, anxious about a new experience, or just want to get some questions answered and learn the subtleties of yoga poses and practices you’ve never had explained, Renkon’s Yoga for Beginners weekly practice is the class for you.

Come once, or come weekly; you’ll always learn something new – no class will ever be the same!

Each week, Mark will guide you through a yoga posture, practice, technique, or philosophy and then guide you through the opportunity to experience it within an accessible yoga practice, too. This weekly class is designed to demystify the magic of yoga and help you learn and build the foundations for a basic yoga practice in a safe and supportive environment where the only bad questions are those that go unasked.

Your Yoga for Beginners class will inspire and empower you with the knowledge and confidence with time to safely participate in a yoga practice just about anywhere. You’ll also have a solid level of knowledge about what yoga is (and what it isn’t) and have all of your questions answered to clear your head and put your heart at ease.

Mark is committed to ensuring you are comfortable, well-prepared, supported (mentally and physically), and making it fun too! Your Beginning Yoga classmates will become a community of close friends as you move through this learning journey together!

When it comes to feeling connected and comfortable, our community-focused yoga studio rooted in the power of human connection is the place to be.

As with all classes at Renkon, variations and modifications of postures will be offered throughout the practice, creating a safe environment to challenge yourself and deepen your yoga practice.

No experience is necessary to start where you are. Our goal is always to ensure you feel safe and supported from the moment you arrive to class. You don’t have to be extra fit, strong or flexible to enjoy this mindful movement practice, but a general good bill of health free from movement restrictions is a must when beginning any movement practice. Please consult your physician to determine if this is an appropriate movement practice for you.

Chair Yoga

Chair yoga takes place seated in and sometimes standing beside a chair for balance support and includes slow, gentle movements and relaxation techniques.

Rejuvenate muscles, bring safe healing to connective tissues, improve joint function and your balance while connecting with your Renkon community during this weekly chair yoga practice. Your chair yoga class begins with a guided breathing (pranayama) practice and ends with final relaxation (savasana) to integrate the experience.

Whether you’re looking for safe ways to improve your quality of life and health, recovering from an injury, hoping to develop strength and stability, or searching for a safe and accessible way to begin a movement practice for fitness and vitality, this class is for you.

No experience is necessary to start where you are. This slow-moving and accessible yoga class focuses on ensuring you feel safe and supported from the moment you begin. As with all classes at Renkon, variations and modifications of postures will be offered throughout the practice, creating a safe environment to safely challenge yourself and deepen your yoga practice.

This is a “come as you are” virtual studio space. There’s no experience or fancy pants necessary. Please dress comfortably for ease of movement and be sure to have a water bottle handy. Prior to class start, select a a chair – preferably without arms, minimal cushioning and straight-backed and flat-seated chair (something similar to a folding chair or dining room chair).

Restorative Yoga

Restorative Yoga is a passive and gentle, yet powerful practice consisting of seated and supine poses typically held for several minutes.

Moving slowly into and holding these opening postures alongside intentional breath work allows the practitioner to calm and center the mind and nervous system while accessing deep opening and release within the body.

Restorative Yoga was developed to access connective tissues allowing for deepening flexibility and aiding healing while increasing energy flow.

Renkon is a “come as you are” virtual studio space. There’s no experience or fancy pants necessary. Please dress comfortably for ease of movement and be sure to have a water bottle handy. Prior to class start, have your home yoga practice area set up: mat rolled out facing your screen/device, technology ready, water bottle handy, and props nearby (we suggest having 2 beach towels or blankets on hand, along with tissues, two blocks and a strap if you have them).

Yin Yoga

Our Yin Yoga class incorporates longer held postures paired with conscious breath to help facilitate the slow and safe opening of connective tissues throughout your body. Yin postures are often seated, supine and sometimes standing and are paired with intentional transitions and breathing for a practice that is described as passive, accessible and often meditative. The Yin postures are gently held for several minutes to facilitate a deep tissue release with the deliberate use of props and modification options to support a slow, gentle release and to gradually support muscles with holding the body independent of props.

Holding poses doesn’t equal “hard” – it gives your muscles time to release the tension they may be holding onto…exactly what they need! You will literally feel your body softening as you breathe.

There’s no “get up and get down” happening in this 60 minute class, so its extra-accessible for those seeking a less dynamic experience. After a generous final relaxation (savasana), our practice will finish with a guided meditation (this is what puts the “plus” in the class name). Our hope is to provide a practice that will allow you to feel relaxed in spirit, calm in body, and “high on life” in mind by the end.

This class can support you with clearing a busy mind, lengthening and strengthening muscles as well as connective tissues, and calming your nervous system. Additionally, this practice can lead to improved mobility, balance, and support your general well-being. This class is a step up from our restorative offerings (as it is technically an active class, although it feels oh-so-relaxing), yet is definitely more passive than our gentle and more dynamic yoga practices. It’s an ideal place for those new to yoga, individuals focusing on improving strength and mobility, those seeking resources for inflammation and stress reduction, and anyone who desires a slow and accessible, internally-focused yoga practice.

As with all classes at Renkon, variations and modifications of postures will be offered throughout the practice, creating a safe environment to challenge yourself and deepen your yoga practice.

Gentle Flow Yoga

Gentle Flow Yoga is an accessible vinyasa-styled exploration of flowing yoga sequences that is dynamic enough to be considered a workout but gentle enough for every practitioner.

Gentle Flow Yoga begins with a deeply grounding warmup that supports your body to gradually transition to the flowing practice, intentionally supported by the breath.

This practice is literally for everyone but was designed with those newer to yoga and/or fitness in mind. Our focus is on accessibility making this our go-to option for literally every body. (Yes, even you!)

This yoga class is a highly-accessible offering, and a favorite cross-training option for athletes and those who self-identify as “not flexible,” as well as those looking to develop muscle-memory and body awareness for increased strength and balance.

Be Well Yoga

Join us for a playful revival of body, mind and spirit – an intentional act of starting where you are and showing up on behalf of living your best life.

This yoga practice is designed to enrich your capacity for a more fully embodied and present lifestyle through guided breath, meditation, and movement practices that cultivate a sense of light-hearted equanimity and grounded well-being.

The 75 minute class will begin with breath practice and guided meditation followed by a thorough warm-up sequence to prepare your joints, tissues, fascia and muscles for an exploration of gradually deepening postures and longer holds. The practice will move at an intentionally slow-but-steady pace to ensure time for safe transitions and prop support for alignment, while maintaining an inward-focused awareness. Despite the slower pace, this class is more physically demanding than our restorative and gentle classes. Most will experience a satisfying warming of the body resulting in a lovely glisten by the end of practice.

In our hyper-connected, hustle and numb culture, Renkon is honored to offer a spot of sacred Monday morning respite and sustainable well-being support to help you bounce back from the brink of burnout, clear out the internal clutter, replenish your energy and show up for life as the very best, true-blue version of you.

As with all classes at Renkon, variations and modifications of postures will be offered throughout the practice, creating a safe environment to challenge yourself and deepen your yoga practice.

Moderate Flow Yoga

More vigorous than our restorative and gentle offerings, this practice cultivates a physical state of strength, flexibility and vitality while also creating the conditions for a balanced inner landscape and resilient mind-body container.

This practice involves variations of standing, seated, and balanced postures flowing together with a focus on alignment while deepening into an experience of self-observation and staying in the moment. A glistening sweat adds a purifying element to your practice. Moderate Flow yoga always begins with a breathing (pranayama) practice and ends with final relaxation (savasana) for integration of the experience.

Body Dynamic Slow Flow Yoga

Join our Bridget for a mindful movement practice designed to help you better understand, support and strengthen the way YOUR body moves.

Built around the gait cycle, this slower flowing yoga practice uses movement patterns to help you create stronger connections in your body, allowing you to integrate healthy-for-you movement patterns into your daily life on and off the mat (which sometimes means UNlearning movement patterns that aren’t supported in your body, too!). This class is based in healthy biomechanics and fascial training. Fascia envelopes and connects every aspect of our body. While we often think about movement in terms of joints and muscles, this practice incorporates specific movements and exercises to target the fascia – your body’s largest organ that supports movement and stores all the information of past traumas, movement patterns and more.

Our Body Dynamic Slow Flow practice will help your body learn to move with greater ease and adaptability. Whether you’re looking for pain relief in everyday life or to take your athletic performance to the next level, hoping to increase healthy range of motion in your body for ease of lifestyle, injury recovery or prevention, or even a cross-training option that can be incorporated, this practice is for you!

Body Dynamic Slow Flow will help you understand how to move YOUR body the way it is designed. You’ll better understand your gait, and movement patterns and how some of them might actually be creating those chronic aches and pains you’ve come to believe are just a normal part of life. Great news, they don’t have to be! By understanding where and how connections should be happening in your body, you’ll begin to discover how subtle changes to your movements patterns may actually allow your body to repair movement disconnects you may not even know are happening. The practice will incorporate movements to cultivate a full healthy range of motion with a balance of strength and flexibility.

Come home to your body to better understand and appreciate the magnificent design of the human body and how to support yours with healthy movement patterns. Feel better, move better because you respect the way your body naturally moves. Learn to work WITH your body, not against it.

As with all classes at Renkon, variations and modifications of postures will be offered throughout the practice, creating a safe environment to challenge yourself and deepen your yoga practice.

(Warmed) Vinyasa Yoga

Join us for a practice that will energize and revitalize you. Renkon’s Vinyasa Yoga class is our most physically dynamic yoga practice. Tapas is a sanskrit word that iterally translates to “produced by heat”, specifically the kind of heat generated by certain yogic practices, and refers to a personal endeavor of discipline within the practice. Your teacher will guide you through building heat (tapas) through a dynamic flow that includes balance poses, twists, long holds in a pose, and variations of poses, all anchored by deep and steady breath. This practice cultivates a physical state of strength, flexibility and vitality while also creating the conditions for a balanced inner landscape and resilient mind-body container.

Our Vinaysa Yoga class involves variations of standing, seated, and balanced poses with a focus on alignment and the added element of a glistening, purifying sweat. This energizing class always ends with final relaxation (savasana) for integration of the practice.

When in-studio, our Vinyasa Yoga class takes place in a comfortably warmed studio at 75-80 degrees. The practice itself will further generate heat within, energetically, physically, and mentally, too. If you’d like to add the warming element to your home practice while practicing with us virtually, please do so. This is a personal preference and is not necessary to receive the incredible benefits of this practice. Practicing yoga in a warmed space is not appropriate for everyone, please consider consulting your physician to determine if this is a safe personal practice for you.
